From thundering waterfalls and humid rainforests to nimble mice and majestic lions. Game environments and the objects that they are made up of are what make the world look and feel alive. These environments are filled with different objects that interact with each other to create an ecology within the game. Much like the environments of our own world, those within games are made up of flora and fauna drawing inspiration from the Earth`s wildlife which provides restrictions of how the ecology should function or behave. I will be looking at examples of ecology in relation to video games, from analysing and criticising previous theoretical works on ecology, to theorising ecological design based upon a sample of existing games. Further on from this I will begin to provide a framework of how ecological design can be undertaken within the design and development of a game to develop a worthy ecological system.
